Sports Injuries Q & A

What are sports injuries?

Sports injuries are any overuse or impact injury that develops while training, exercising, or playing sports. Some of the most common sports injuries include:

  • Strains and sprains
  • Rotator cuff injuries
  • Achilles tendonitis
  • Stress fractures
  • Broken bones
  • Shin splints
  • Dislocations
  • Concussions

Because injuries start healing quickly and you don’t want damaged tissues and bones to improperly heal, it’s important to have a comprehensive sports injury evaluation as soon as your injury occurs.

When should I see a doctor for a sports injury?

The team at MEDHERO Advanced Urgent Care and Wellness Center encourages you to have a sports injury exam if you hear or feel a popping sensation as the injury occurs. It’s also important to get checked out if you experience:

  • Limited range of motion
  • Swelling, bruising, or inflammation
  • Throbbing, stabbing, or electrical pains
  • Difficulty bearing weight on a foot or leg
  • Obvious deformity, bump, or open wound
  • Severe headaches, dizziness, or fainting spells

It’s also important to have a sports injury evaluation at MEDHERO Advanced Urgent Care and Wellness Center if your pain or discomfort gets worse or doesn’t improve after several days.

How are sports injuries treated?

Your sports injury treatment plan is entirely personalized to you. MEDHERO Advanced Urgent Care and Wellness Center has an on-site radiology department where you can get digital X-ray or ultrasound imaging to help diagnose you on the spot. Depending on the outcome of your sports injury exam and any essential imaging, your treatment may include:

  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or pain medications
  • Rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE)
  • Immobilization with a splint, cast, or brace
  • Heat therapy or topical numbing creams
  • Physical therapy or targeted exercises
  • Activity modifications

The team at MEDHERO Advanced Urgent Care and Wellness Center is also certified in ImPACT®, a computerized neurocognitive testing system used to diagnose, evaluate, and manage concussions that occur during sports. If you or your child took a blow to the head or suffered from an impact collision on the field, your practitioner may recommend going through a concussion evaluation.

MEDHERO Advanced Urgent Care and Wellness Center welcomes walk-in evaluations if you have a sports injury, or you can schedule an appointment online or over the phone.
